What SYP plywood is, and where it differs from other panels

SYP plywood is structural plywood manufactured from Southern Yellow Pine veneers — a dense softwood group grown across the Southeast. Its density is why it holds fasteners well and why it dominates sheathing and industrial packaging in this region.

Two points cause most ordering mistakes:

• SYP plywood is not pressure treated. Unless a panel is specified and stamped as preservative treated, it carries no rot or termite protection. Ground-contact and exposed applications need a treated product instead.
• “CDX” is a veneer grade, not a species. CDX describes a C-grade face, D-grade back, and exterior-type glue. Most CDX sold in South Florida is SYP, but the letters tell you about the faces and adhesive, not the wood.

Reading the grade stamp

Veneer grades run A through D. A is smooth and repairable-free; D allows the largest knotholes. A sheathing panel shows the grade pair, the span rating, the exposure classification, and the mill and agency marks.

Span rating is the pair of numbers such as 32/16 or 40/20: the first is the maximum roof support spacing in inches, the second the maximum floor spacing. It is the number that matters structurally — more than thickness alone.

Exposure classification: Exposure 1 uses exterior glue and tolerates construction delays and weather during the build. Exterior is rated for permanent exposure. Roof and wall sheathing is normally Exposure 1.

Structural panels are sold in nominal thicknesses that do not match their actual measurement. Ordering “1/2-inch” when the drawing calls for 15/32 usually gets the same panel, but on a submittal the distinction matters.

Miami-Dade and Broward Counties sit in the High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) under the Florida Building Code. For roof assemblies there, the sheathing, the fastener schedule, and the assembly as a whole are subject to product approval requirements — a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance (NOA) or a Florida Product Approval — and the nailing pattern is enforced at inspection.

Practical consequence: confirm the specific panel and assembly against the approval documents your permit requires before the panels ship, not after they are on the roof. If your submittal package needs documentation, ask for it at quote time.

Humidity and storage

Panels arriving at a coastal jobsite gain moisture. Keep units banded and covered until installation, sticker them off the slab so air moves underneath, and let panels acclimate before finish work sits on top of them. This is the single cheapest way to avoid callbacks on subfloor and platform work.

Crating, export and industrial use

SYP plywood’s density also makes it the default for crating, dunnage and export packaging moving through the Port of Miami. Those buyers order to a cut list rather than a span rating, and thickness plus consistency of the stack matters more than the veneer face grade.
