Wood Veneer Edge Banding — Species Guide

Match your edge banding to your hardwood plywood face for seamless, furniture-grade results. Species listed below are available through our South Florida distribution network — stocked items ship same day.

White Oak

Tight, Linear Grain — Golden to Gray Tone

The fastest-growing species in contemporary cabinet design. White oak’s closed-grain structure (tyloses) makes it more moisture-resistant than red oak — ideal for kitchen and bath cabinetry. Pairs with white oak plywood for a clean, modern Scandinavian aesthetic. Rift-cut versions available for linear grain consistency.

  • Thin: 0.6 mm
  • Widths: 15/16" – 2"
  • Flat-Cut & Rift-Cut
  • Pre-glued Available

Red Oak

Prominent Open Grain — Warm Pinkish-Brown

The classic American cabinet wood. Red oak’s bold, wavy grain adds visual character to traditional and transitional cabinetry. Available in both 0.6 mm thin veneer and thick 1–3 mm varieties. Maple and Red Oak are available in both coiled rolls and 8 ft strips from major suppliers.

  • Thin: 0.6 mm
  • Thick: 1 mm – 3 mm
  • Widths: 7/8" – 3"
  • 8 ft Strips Available
  • Pre-glued Available

Baltic Birch / Natural Birch

Subtle, Fine Grain — Creamy Light Blonde

The essential edge banding for Baltic birch plywood cabinet boxes. Birch’s clean, understated grain and light color matches Baltic birch face veneers almost perfectly. Used by production cabinet shops as the default edge for exposed plywood edges. Also ideal for Scandinavian and minimalist furniture.

  • Thin: 0.6 mm
  • Widths: 15/16" – 1-1/4"
  • Pre-glued Available
  • Prefinished Available

White Ash

Straight, Open Grain — Pale Yellow to Light Brown

A refined alternative to red oak — similar open-grain character but more consistent and less wild. Ash’s light, creamy color and clean grain work beautifully in modern farmhouse and transitional designs. Takes both light stains and clear finishes exceptionally well.

  • Thin: 0.6 mm
  • Widths: 15/16" – 1-1/4"
  • Pre-glued Available

Alder

Straight, Fine Grain — Light Tan to Reddish-Brown

Popular in the cabinet industry as a cherry substitute — alder mimics cherry beautifully when stained and is significantly more affordable. Soft enough to machine and sand easily. Used widely in custom residential cabinetry and transitional kitchen designs. Matches alder-faced plywood panels.

  • Thin: 0.6 mm
  • Widths: 15/16" – 1-1/4"
  • Pre-glued Available

African Mahogany

Interlocked to Straight Grain — Medium Reddish-Brown

The classic tropical hardwood for luxury furniture and high-end millwork. African mahogany has a beautiful reddish-brown color with occasional ribbon-stripe figure on quartersawn cuts. Used in marine cabinetry, high-end residential work, and commercial millwork. IP&L stocks mahogany lumber to pair with this edge banding.

  • Thin: 0.6 mm
  • Widths: 15/16" – 1-1/4"
  • Pre-glued Available
  • Call for Availability

Hickory

Dramatic Contrast Grain — Cream Sapwood / Brown Heartwood

The hardest North American hardwood (Janka 1,820). Hickory’s striking light/dark contrast grain is its defining feature — ideal for rustic, farmhouse, and transitional cabinet styles. High hardness makes banded edges extremely chip and dent resistant. Perfect for high-traffic kitchen and mudroom cabinets.

  • Thin: 0.6 mm
  • Widths: 15/16" – 1-1/4"
  • Pre-glued Available
  • Call for Availability

Sapele

Ribbon Stripe Figure — Deep Reddish-Brown

Sapele’s quartersawn ribbon-stripe figure makes it one of the most visually striking edge banding options. Deep reddish-brown with interlocked grain creates a dramatic, high-end appearance. Popular in luxury residential cabinetry and commercial millwork as a mahogany alternative. Available through LG-Tec’s South Florida distribution.

  • Thin: 0.6 mm
  • Widths: 15/16" – 1-1/4"
  • Pre-glued Available
  • Special Order

Wenge

Straight, Coarse Grain — Near-Black Brown

An exotic African hardwood with near-black coloring and dramatic light/dark grain striping. Wenge edge banding transforms modern cabinetry into a statement piece. Extremely dense (Janka ~1,630) and naturally resistant to moisture and insects. Pairs with wenge or dark walnut-faced panels for contemporary luxury interiors.

  • Thin: 0.6 mm
  • Widths: 15/16" – 1-1/4"
  • Pre-glued Available
  • Special Order

Additional specialty species available on request — including Teak, Zebrano, Douglas Fir, Poplar, Steamed Beech, Red Elm, Bamboo, Anigre, Eucalyptus, Okume, and more. Our South Florida distribution network includes access to 28+ veneer species and 488+ PVC color profiles through trade partners. Call (305) 884-0860 to request any species not listed.
