What Is OSB?

OSB (Oriented Strand Board) is a structural panel manufactured from wood strands bonded with resin and oriented in perpendicular layers for strength. It is the most widely used structural sheathing panel in US residential construction, having largely replaced CDX plywood for sheathing applications due to its cost efficiency.

  • Structural equivalence — OSB is APA-rated as equivalent to plywood for most sheathing applications
  • Consistent thickness — tighter tolerance than CDX plywood; no voids
  • Cost-effective — typically less expensive than equivalent CDX plywood
  • Large panel format — available in 4×8 and 4×9 sheets

OSB Applications

Roof Sheathing

OSB is widely specified for residential roof decking in South Florida. For Miami-Dade’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ), verify that the OSB product carries the required wind uplift ratings and is installed per Miami-Dade NOA (Notice of Acceptance) specifications.

Wall Sheathing

OSB structural sheathing panels (OSB with housewrap-integrated facing) are used for exterior wall assemblies, providing racking resistance and a weather-resistive barrier in one panel.

Subfloor

APA-rated OSB in tongue-and-groove format is the industry standard for subfloor decking in wood-frame residential construction. Available in 23/32″ (equivalent to 3/4″) T&G format for floor systems.

Frequently Asked Questions — OSB Miami

Is OSB approved for Miami-Dade High-Velocity Hurricane Zone construction?

Specific OSB products carry Miami-Dade Notices of Acceptance (NOA) for use in the HVHZ. Verify that your specified OSB product has the appropriate NOA and is installed per manufacturer specifications for hurricane zone compliance. Call us at (305) 884-0860 for guidance on currently stocked products.

Does OSB hold up in South Florida’s humidity?

OSB’s edges are more susceptible to moisture swelling than plywood if exposed during construction. In South Florida’s rainy season, it is critical to keep OSB sheathing covered and to seal all edges promptly. For applications with prolonged moisture exposure, CDX plywood or pressure-treated panels are preferable.

What is the difference between OSB and particle board?

OSB is a structural panel with oriented wood strands and is APA-rated for load-bearing sheathing applications. Particle board uses much finer wood particles, has no structural rating, and is used for furniture and cabinet backs only — it is not a structural substitute for OSB.
