Fire-Retardant Treated Plywood — Not Standard Plywood
FRT (Fire-Retardant Treated) plywood is standard structural plywood pressure-impregnated with fire-retardant chemicals that dramatically slow the spread of flame and reduce smoke development. It meets ASTM E84 testing with a Class A flame spread index of 25 or less — the highest fire-performance classification available for wood panels.
FRT plywood is not the same as fire-rated drywall and cannot substitute for gypsum in listed assemblies. It is specified when building codes or fire marshals require wood panels to carry fire-retardant treatment — most commonly in data centers, electrical rooms, multifamily roofing, and temporary event structures.
Three Industries That Can’t Use Standard Plywood
Data Centers & Server Rooms
Data centers are required to maintain a minimum 1-hour fire-rated assembly in IT equipment spaces, electrical rooms, battery rooms, and staging areas. FRT plywood is specified for server room subfloor panels, raised floor systems, and wall backing — anywhere wood must meet fire-performance requirements without substituting gypsum.

Electrical Rooms & Panel Backboards
Electrical panel mounting boards (backboards) in commercial and industrial buildings are required by many local jurisdictions and inspectors to be constructed of FRT plywood with a minimum 1-hour fire resistance. Standard plywood fails inspection in electrical rooms, data closets, telecom rooms, and MDF/IDF spaces.

Concert Stages & Event Production
