What Is MDF Board?

MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is an engineered wood panel manufactured by bonding wood fibers with resin under high heat and pressure. The result is a dense, uniform panel with no grain direction, no knots, and no voids — the preferred substrate for painted cabinet doors, furniture panels, and architectural moldings throughout South Florida.

Call (305) 884-0860 for current inventory, pricing, and same-day delivery scheduling.

  • Perfectly flat & smooth — no sanding needed before primer or paint
  • No grain direction — routes, cuts, and machines consistently in all directions
  • Uniform density — consistent screw-holding throughout the panel
  • Superior paint surface — best substrate for painted cabinet doors
  • CARB2 compliant — meets California Air Resources Board formaldehyde standards
  • Cost-effective — lower price per sheet than solid wood for painted applications

MDF Board Miami — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers from our lumber desk. Call (305) 884-0860 for current stock and pricing.

What is the difference between standard MDF and moisture-resistant MDF?

Standard MDF is the industry workhorse for cabinet doors, painted furniture panels, shelving, and architectural moldings — CARB2-compliant and dimensionally consistent, but not designed for exposure to moisture. Moisture-resistant MDF (identifiable by its green-tinted core) contains moisture-resistant additives that let it withstand South Florida’s year-round humidity, occasional water contact, and coastal air. For any kitchen, bath, laundry, or coastal cabinet work in Miami-Dade or Broward, we strongly recommend moisture-resistant MDF. Both grades are in stock in all standard thicknesses.

What thickness of MDF do I need for cabinet doors and cabinet boxes?

For cabinet door panels and furniture components, 1/2″ MDF is the most popular thickness — thick enough for solid door construction, light enough for handling and hardware. For full-thickness cabinet carcass work, heavy shelving, and furniture frames, 3/4″ MDF is the industry workhorse size. For decorative overlays, drawer bottoms, and cabinet backs, 1/4″ is standard. We stock every thickness from 1/8″ through 1″ — call for specific SKUs and current pricing.

Do you carry Ultra Light MDF in oversized panels?

Yes. We stock 3/4″ Ultra Light MDF in both 4×10 ft and 5×12 ft oversized sheets — ideal for large cabinet doors, tall panels, full-height cabinet runs, and commercial millwork requiring minimal seams. Ultra Light is significantly lighter than standard MDF, which reduces handling fatigue and shipping weight on RTA furniture programs. Quantities are limited — call (305) 884-0860 to confirm current stock before your project starts.

What are MDF slatwall panels and what can they hold?

Our 3/4″ MDF slatwall panels are 4′ × 8′ merchandising and organization panels with 16 T-slot grooves per panel (3″ on center) that accept all standard slatwall hooks, shelves, and brackets. Without aluminum inserts, each groove supports up to 30 lbs when stud-mounted; with inserts (sold separately), 50–100 lbs per groove. Density is 45–48 lb/ccf with a 120–130 PSI internal bond. Standard finish is white melamine; paint-ready unfinished is available. Common uses: retail store fixtures, garage tool walls, cabinet-shop clamp racks, and reusable trade show displays.

Is MDF a good substrate for painted cabinet doors?

Yes — MDF is the preferred substrate for painted cabinet doors across the professional cabinet industry. Its perfectly flat, smooth surface eliminates the need for grain-filling or extensive sanding before priming, and its uniform density means consistent screw-holding throughout the panel. Because MDF has no grain direction, no knots, and no voids, it routes and machines cleanly on CNC equipment. For a finished paint job, MDF outperforms solid wood by eliminating telegraphing and grain raise. For clear or stained finishes, use hardwood plywood instead — MDF is a paint-only substrate.

Do you deliver MDF the same day to job sites in Miami-Dade and Broward?

Yes. All in-stock MDF grades (standard, moisture-resistant, and Ultra Light) ship same-day to Miami-Dade and Broward County job sites when ordered before noon. Standard delivery is flatbed drop-off; forklift drop-off is available as an add-on service. For pickup, our warehouse at 7340 NW 56th St, Doral, FL 33166 is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Call (305) 884-0860 to confirm stock and schedule delivery.
